William Kentridge: How we make sense of the world

Lecture notes:

William Kentridge is a South African artist best known for his prints, drawings and animation films.

"Johannesburg the Second Greatest City after Paris" is an animation made from 25 drawings. It introduces the viewer to characters central to most of Kentridge's subsequent films in his series. Soho Eckstein is a prosperous Johannesburg property developer, equally indifferent to the well-being of his workers and the emotional needs of his wife. Made at the time when international pressure on South Africa to abolish apartheid had reached it's greatest intensity, the film is a reminder that western societies were once built on similarly inhumane principles.
